If you have been around here a bit you know eco friendly swaps and approaches are my jam. I am doing my best at making changes and choices to better protect our beautiful planet. Reducing our families plastic use is a challenging task, yet every little bit helps.

We use bees wax wraps, cotton fabric coated with bees wax and some other special ingredients, to replace single use plastic wrap.

This eco friendly swap is fun to make. They can be tedious, and there are several ways to make them, and several places to buy them. I’ve tried commercially made wraps and making my own.

Here is the way I make them!

Unwaxed fabric from Second Nature Studio, bees wax and resin bar

WHAT YOU NEED 100% Cotton Fabric- I use my own prints, printed on 100% organic cotton from Spoonflower. You can use any 100% cotton fabric of your choice, just wash and dry it first. Into thrifting? Old t-shirts are great for this! Sharp scissors or rotary cutter Self healing mat Bees wax - My friend has an apiary, I get my wax from her! Mix of jojoba oil, coconut oil, pine resin- I use a specially sourced bar for this. You can research mass produced bars or get the items and create your own mix. Brush Small crockpot - I bought mine at a thrift store for $3 Parchment paper Cookie sheet Oven set at 250°

STEP ONE

Wash and Dry Fabric Cut to desired sizes ( I use 12 x 12, 10 x 10, 8 x 8)

step one cut fabric to size

STEP TWO

Melt ingredients for coating (bees wax, jojoba oil, coconut oil and pine resin) This amount shown will coat about 8-10 wraps

step 2 melt ingredients

STEP THREE

Line cookie sheet with parchment paper Coat fabric evenly with brush, front and back

coat fabric with mix shown uncoated and coated difference

STEP FOUR

Place cookie sheet with coated fabric in pre heated oven

Let the coating melt into the fabric, about 20 minutes

STEP FIVE

Lay flat to dry Fold and use! Or give as a gift!

*** Remember to wash your wraps with cold water, mild soap and completely dry before storing. Don’t use on raw meat or hot foods. Avoid heat***

When your wraps are nearing the end of the coating life, you can reapply the coating, or cut into strips and use for fire starter, or cut into pieces and compost!

Happy creating!
