Sustainability in Business: Unlock the Secrets to Manufacturing Sustainable Stationery!

eco-friendly recycled paper stationery from second nature studio

Are you eager to get your art on stationery? Let me show you how to incorporate eco-conscious choices in your stationery production with small batch production, where sustainability takes center stage. Consumers are becoming more aware of how their spending and purchasing is affecting the environment. Makers are looking for quality, speed and small batches. With it’s low cost, variety of options and ability to showcase artwork in a useful and tangible way, stationery is a popular choice to produce. Let me show you how to choose sustainable options using a popular production facility as an example: Stationery HQ.

My own experiences with Stationery HQ I have been using Stationery HQ for several years. Products I have ordered: coasters, invitations, wrapping paper, DIY cut sheets, spiral notebook, various cards sizes. I have tried various stocks through the years, 130# PCW Recycled is my favorite, for sustainability but also weight and ink coverage. I am always thrilled with the quality, ability to order small quantities and fast turnaround. The customer service is top notch, I reached out to them asking several questions concerning their environmental commitments, product offerings and sustainable choices in their processes. They have been transparent, forthcoming and very helpful in investigating if they didn’t know an answer. As a business owner who is always reaching out asking questions of potential partners, these are all very positive signs.

Let’s talk about going green for a moment. With a growing emphasis on sustainability, consumers are demanding eco-friendly alternatives to traditional stationery products. The shift towards small batch production plays a pivotal role in reducing the environmental footprint associated with mass manufacturing. Stationery HQ offers low MOQ (minimum order quantity) and specializes in paper goods, meaning they have honed their practices to be as efficient as possible.

How do you wade through all the options and choose sustainable materials? When it comes to crafting sustainable stationery, the choice of materials is paramount. Opting for eco-friendly options such as recycled paper, FSC certified, hemp, or bamboo can significantly mitigate the environmental impact of production. Not all papers offered hit the mark for sustainability. Stationery HQ offers 3 sustainable options.

By offering FSC papers and recycled paper for several products in their production process, Stationery HQ is taking steps in the right direction for supporting eco-friendly stationers. I did reach out to customer service to confirm these papers are available, and was pleasantly surprised to learn their mid weight paper was a sustainable option as well. It is not called out on the site, so I wanted to mention it here so you are informed. Let’s look at the sustainable paper options available at Stationery HQ. 70# Opaque - available for planners, spiral notebooks, wrapping paper and a few of the other products is a FSC Mix (mid weight) The paper is made with a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC-controlled wood. While controlled wood doesn't come from FSC-certified forests, it lessens the risk of the material originating from unacceptable sources. When it comes to sustainability, responsibly managed forests is key.

130# Mohawk 100% PCW Recycled - available for cards Mohawk is a long standing partner for sustainable and responsible paper making practices. Their mills are wind powered, they have excellent practices in place for water use and water treatment. The 100% PCW Recycled means it is made 100% of recycled materials. When it comes to sustainability, reusing is key and this paper hits that mark.

150# Bamboo - available for cards Elemental chlorine free, acid free and archival. Bamboo is a highly renewable resource, it grows very quickly without fertilizers, pesticides and requires little water. When it comes to sustainability, responsible sourcing is key.

Be aware of your choices for printing and how it can affect the recyclability and compostability of your product. For example, gold foil (swoon, I know!) can render your paper non-recyclable, check with your curbside recycling company to see if they accept foil printed papers, not all do. Other coatings can also make paper non-recyclable. While gold foil and coatings have their place, try to use them as little as possible. Mindful Printing Practices with HP Indigo Printing plays a crucial role in the stationery production process, and adopting eco-conscious techniques can make a world of difference. Enter HP Indigo Press, a digital printing technology known for its greener practices and exceptional print quality. By harnessing less energy usage and reduced water printing, HP Indigo minimizes electricity usage and conserves water, making it one of the printing industries environmentally friendly printing solutions. Read more about the Indigo Press. I was not able to confirm the type of ink used before publishing this post, however, most HP Indigo presses use ElectroInk which allows products printed on an HP Indigo digital press to be deinkable, recyclable and even compostable. (information found on the HP site)
